   Post subject: EventScripts End-of-Life

Hey everyone--

I meant to post this two and a half years ago, but I've just never been able to bring myself to announce it formally. This community is so amazing that it's been a painful guilt of mine that I cannot invest more in it. But it's clearly unfair not to announce formally-- in case there's anyone who might still hope that this project could continue.

EventScripts will not be further maintained, updated or released. The sites that I host around EventScripts will stay up until I cannot keep them running sanely-- that would be at least two years, but if there are still visitors to them then, I may be able to keep them going indefinitely. (This is assuming there are no major issues with the servers, of course.)

For those of you still developing for Source games, I highly recommend that you look into alternatives such as Source.Python. They've got some bright people working on it. :) SourceMod, of course, is also awesome and they have their own great team.

The friends I made in this community are ones I hope to have for life-- and I'm very proud of what this community has achieved. If you didn't know, ES started as a way for me to run a special cfg for each round on the fy_poolparty map. It's insane to think that somehow it all grew into its own "shell" language and addon infrastructure, with people actually using it, building upon it, learning from it, and then teaching me all sorts of great things in return! None of this would have been possible without the ES volunteer staff-- I owe them a lot and will love them all forever. :D

I wish you all the best of luck with your future gaming and coding. My sincerest apologies for not announcing this sooner.

If you have questions, toss them here and I'll try to answer (the pleasant ones ;) ).

No, SM is hardly an option for plugins (C++), and even much less so for Admin.

What in the world? I don't recall ever being an ass to you, or anyone here. And this kind of talk against anyone was never tolerated here.

Everything I provided here was 100% free and in my (and other volunteers') free time for years and years. I don't know how you can be that entitled or ungrateful.

I won't be open sourcing EventScripts-- if there's a team who needs specific portions for use in their project, they should reach out to me and I'll help them out.

I figured we'd keep them writable until such time as spam and vandalism make that problematic. If people still want to discuss or document, I'm fine with that happening on these sites. But keep in mind the sites are "deprecated" and it's probably best to find a better long-term location for anything you want to preserve.

Why don't you move over to using Source.Python instead, as he suggested? There is pretty much nothing that ES had that isn't already available in Source.Python (except for all the built-in es_ commands). Our repository is open-source, so feel free to have a look around:

Mattie, maybe you could ask the people at ArchiveTeam.org to preserve a read-only copy of the whole site? Of course it would be great if the internal sections could also be preserved somehow.

I'm not in any hurry to shut any of the sites down. If I end up finding it necessary for some crazy reason in the coming years, then I'll look into options like that. For now, probably isn't an issue.

It's been years since I last posted, but I haven't forgot about this community at all. I will be eternally grateful for all the help and advice provided during my many years of learning to become a programmer. I'm now a professional games programmer working on AAA titles, and I don't think I'd be where I am today without the support provided through here. It's been almost 10 years (viewtopic.php?f=25&t=17433) since I started my journey and I haven't looked back since, and it was this community that set in stone my career path.

Hey Mattie,

thanks for your plugin. Because of it I taught myself Python and learned how to program properly, it actually was what got me into programming. Same as freddukes I am now also working in the games industry and basically everything started here.

I also want to express my extreme gratitude to this community for providing guidance and support to me as I learned to program years ago. I ended up choosing a profession that has nothing to do with programming; where my only exposure to that world these days is the very rare and simple usage of VBA for Excel. Regardless though, I had a blast with all of this back in the day.

And happy belated birthday Mattie.
