Post subject: EventScripts 2.0 (stable for pre-Orange Box games)

EventScripts 2.0

Download:
Latest build:
 http://mattie.net/downloads/mattie_even ... 2_250i.zip (9.8MB, Linux & Windows)

Special thanks!
A very special thanks to the release team who tested this actively and added tons of functionality to ES2. This release is the biggest release in EventScripts history, and we owe it primarily to their gracious help. Many, many thanks!
Backwards Compatibility
As with every release, backwards compatibility is the #1 priority. All your old scripts should work great. This release has been tested to ensure full backwards compatibility as far back as we could manage. The only known issues are related to installation problems on some Linux servers and changes to undocumented parts of the services command. See the Known Issues list for more information.
Installation:
The installation is the same as EventScripts 1.x. Stop your server, extract the files, and then copy the addons folder over your addons folder. (See the EventScriptsGuide for more guidance.) Note: Two game server rental companies have reported issues installing EventScripts 2. We have workarounds for those on the Known Issues page. Try that first if you have problems.
New Features:
  • Full Python 2.5 language support for addons: Scripts can now be written in Python! This provides a huge world of new possibilities. :!: See the FAQ for details on the coolness.
  • Performance boosts!: Many existing scripts will see dramatic performance improvements. Core libraries (e.g. popup, keymenu) were rewritten in Python for speed.
  • Multi-lingual support: Addons can now easily provide strings files for translation. See the MugMod 2.0 example to see it in action.
  • New! eXtensible Admin (XA) - (Available in Beta 2) Full-featured admin addon, written to be easily extensible with your existing ES scripts. (See FAQ)
  • Automatic addon downloads - Admins are able to use es_install to download and install addons via their console. It supports installing any approved addons directly from the Addon Manager.
  • ... and more!: Chat filters, tick listeners, raw client command handling, new ways to optimize EventScripts for clan/tournament servers, more VGUI menu support, effect library, bug fixes, web page parsing, reliability improvements, etc.
Documentation:Beta Testing:
  • This is a major new release and, thus, a major beta. It won't work perfectly, but we'll try to get things fixed when there are issues.
  • Please provide feedback and issues in this forum: ES2 Discussion

Detailed Thanks!
Thanks again to the ES2 Release Team. Please tell them "thank you" because ES2 wouldn't exist without their help!

Nice Mattie ^^
But my opinion is, that the easy language, called ES, get lose.
ES is a very simple language, but Python looks very hard.

"get lose", what does that mean?

The existing language won't be going anywhere. We just want more languages, and might even consider more after we see how well Python support works.

The cool thing for the ES Classic language is that a lot of its commands will get faster. Over time we'll rewrite almost all of corelib in Python such that all scripts will benefit. Also I've made it easy internally that when I add a feature for one language, the other language automatically gets it.

Let me know your thoughts, though,
-Mattie

Hey Mattie.
I mean, that new coders, want to learn an easy language, but get a new, harder language, like Python.
If too many scripters only write new scripts in Python, the new ones don't get the overview what is possible with ES Classic and the new ES. They maybe give up coding for ES.
For me, Python looks like the same complicated language like SourceMOD use it. I like ES, and I never change - but I think that the "tradition" got losed ;)

Chris

Edit: I don't want to say it is bad that Python is included now. I think it give us new possibilities for Scripts ;)

Everything in ES 1.5 is still in ES 2.0, so don't feel that the Python language is something you must use now. I will tell you that Python gets a lot easier as you use it, and is much much faster than ES classic.

Chrisber wrote:

Well, it's a little more complicated, but it's one of the easiest full scripting language out there.

For example, This sort of script looks almost as easy as it does in ESS:
http://python.eventscripts.com/pages/My_First_Addon

Still, I hear you. I chose Python to strike a balance and give us one more level of scripting and something for new scripters to try after they learn ESS.

With ~900 scripts already written in ES 1.x, I don't see anyone abandoning it anytime soon. :) Lots of people will prefer it and they're the entire reason this plugin exists-- to make it easier for admins and scripters to enhance their own game servers.

Thanks again,
-Mattie

Edit: Changed into "(in my opinion)" to "one of the easiest".

Wow I am glad I took that intro to python class last spring at school.... this is really neat. So using python commands will be faster than the current ones?
